The emergence of the field of green chemistry as framework for sustainability thinking has been one marked by considerable achievements over the past twenty-five years. In virtually every area of chemistry and every business sector touched by chemistry, advances in green chemistry have brought about more sustainable products processes and systems. Yet as we move into the next phases of development, it is clear that truly transformative innovations will not come solely from within a single discipline but rather through leveraging the power and perspectives of green chemistry in a trans-disciplinary manner; one that understands and utilizes integrative systems thinking.
